Hyena Skull BC-032 Unusual among mammals, the female Spotted Hyena is significantly larger than the male and more aggressive. One explanation for the presence of the females' higher level of testosterone is that the females are necessarily ferocious in order to protect and feed the young, whose skulls remain incompletely developed until they are past sexual maturity. Although a scavenger, the spotted Hyena also hunts in packs. Their massive jaws can crush elephant bones. This specimen is female from East Africa. Hyena Larger View Click here.
