Brachycephaly in Pets

Brachycephaly is a trait of domestic dogs and cats that have been selectively bred to have short skulls and snouts. In some instances, this trait was introduced for aesthetic reasons. The rounder heads and large eyes give an appearance that can be considered puppy-like and endearing. In other instances, the trait was introduced because of the stronger bite force produced from a shorter muzzle.

Breathing issues, dental crowding and eye problems are common in brachycephalic pets. Bone Clones carries a variety of dog and cat skulls that illustrate these issues. Below is a selection of these skulls along with non-brachycephalic skulls for comparison.
