Aquatic Animals New Products

Aquatic and marine animals live in or near water and include birds, mammals, turtles, fish, sharks, and rays. Aquatic animals are adapted to life in and around water. Many aquatic adaptations take similar form: fusiform, or torpedo-like, bodies, flippers to assist in propulsion, the reduction or loss of hind limbs and pelvis, and a non-bony tail. An examination of the skeletal form gives insight into an animal’s survival strategy. Fossil Whale Teeth, Basilosaurus cetoides, Set of 16

Basilosaurus, one of the first fully aquatic whales, had large multi-cusped teeth adapted for shearing fish and squid. It is believed to have been one of the largest animals of the Paleogene period, reaching around 70 feet in length and weighing up to 15 tons! As a fierce apex predator, Basilosaurus hunted sharks, large fish, and the smaller dolphin-like relative, Dorudon.

Megalodon Shark Jaw

The Megalodon shark inhabited the warm coastal waters of the world approximately 17 million years ago to about 2 million years ago. Their somewhat smaller predecessors roamed the seas as early as the late Eocene, about 35 mya. The specimens from which these teeth came are estimated to have lived about 10 mya.

Whorl Tooth Shark Teeth (Helicoprion)

Until recently, very little was known about the unusual specimen called the whorl tooth shark except that the front teeth grew in a spiral containing up to 180 teeth. This cast is made from the specimen of the type genus, Helicoprion bessonovi, and was found in the Arta Beds in the Ural Region of Russia in 1899.
