Human Female Cranium with Incomplete Trephination
BCH-819 $330.00

From the Hrdlicka Paleopathology Collection at the San Diego Museum of Man, this female cranium exhibits one of the most unusual examples of trephination. This incomplete trephining in the right portion of the frontal bone is thought to have been caused by a drilling tool, causing a series of circular holes. Trephining, or sometimes called trepanning, is the surgical removal of a piece of the skull and according to paleopathologists, this is done for a variety of reasons: as therapeutic treatment for complications associated with skull trauma, to cure mental disorders, or to keep the skull piece as a powerful ritualistic object. This cranium exhibits a metopic suture, lambdoidal wormian bones, healed injury to the left nasal and maxilla, and radiating fractures involving the frontal, right parietal, and temporal bones. In fact, the fractures may have prompted this trephination.
