These bone pathology casts demonstrate the effects of rickets, a metabolic disorder resulting from a vitamin D deficiency. Lack of vitamin D results in the inadequate mineralization of bone; therefore, the bones are unable to support biomechanical function. Deformity or bowing of the pelvis and/or leg bones occurs. As can be seen on these specimens, the leg bones have bowed as a result of gravity and weight pressing down on the lower limbs. The head and neck of the femur form a low angle with the shaft, the top of the head being well below the top of the greater trochanter. The tibia is short and sturdy and shows pronounced anterolateral bowing. The fibula has an "s-shaped" curvature of the shaft, with dorsal curvature of the proximal third and latero-ventral curvature of the distal two-thirds.
