Human Left Femur, Osteosarcoma

This bone pathology cast of a femur illustrates the impact of an osteosarcoma. This malignant tumor has enveloped the upper half of the bone in a billowy mass of spongy bone, destroying much of the original structure. The proximal end is missing (pathological fracture?), but some of the original head must have survived because part of the acetabular surface is still intact. Evidence of osteosarcoma in the fossil record has been found in a dinosaur bone estimated to be 150 million years old. We are grateful to the San Diego Museum of Man for the opportunity to cast this specimen from the Stanford-Meyer Osteopathology Collection. A portion of the sales goes to further their work.
