Auditory exostosis (also sometimes called "surfer's ear") is a benign lesion made up of a mass of dense bone within the ear canal (bony bumps are found within). While the cause is an unresolved issue, many believe it is a response to cold water immersion, since the lesion is common among people who exploit marine or freshwater resources.
