This skeletal pathology cast of a human male mandible is from a specimen collected in Huarochiri, Peru, from about a thousand years ago. This mandible displays abscesses (holes) caused by a bacterial infection. A dental abscess is a localized collection of pus in a cavity formed by tissue disintegration along the gumline of the teeth.
