This skeletal pathology cast of a human male mandible is from a specimen collected in Huarochiri, Peru, from about a thousand years ago. This mandible displays abscesses (holes) caused by a bacterial infection. A dental abscess is a localized collection of pus in a cavity formed by tissue disintegration along the gumline of the teeth. With gratitude to the San Diego Museum of Man for allowing us to cast this specimen from the Hrdlicka Paleopathology Collection. A portion of the sales goes to further their work.
