Human Male Cranium, Leishmaniasis
BCH-807 $357.00
One of several Bone Clones® Osteopathology casts, this human skull illustrates leishmaniasis. Leishmaniasis is a disease with relevance to physical and cultural anthropology. Pre-Inca pottery (first century A.D.) found in Peru and Ecuador depicts the effects of this disease, showing humans with lesions near their nose and mouth. There are records from a thousand years ago from the Middle East that detail the disease. It is transmitted to humans by the bite of one of several species of sandflies that are infected with the protozoa. The disease has been reported by U.S. troops stationed in Southwest Asia.
The Bone Clones® bone pathology cast has an extensive lesion (with some new bone present) of the right maxilla (extending onto the left maxilla) resulting in destruction of the alveolus from the right first molar through the left first premolar. There is also a large perforation into the maxillary sinus, two perforations into the floor of the nasal aperture, and an enlargement of the anterior palatine canals. Additionally, there is extensive alveolar abscessing at the left first molar.
