An example of diseased bone, this patella reveals the effects of osteoarthritis, the most common form of joint disease today. It is a degenerative disease, often associated with age. It results from the deterioration of cartilage between joints that produces bone-on-bone contact. Bone rubbing against bone results in eburnation (polishing), grooving (grinding into the bone), and/or lipping (new bone formation along the joint margins). This patella displays eburnation on much of the medial articular surface, and the adjacent margin shows lipping, or osteophyte development.
