Osteology and archaeology intersect in the field of bio-archaeology. Bones and bone fragments found in burial sites and abandoned settlements inform archaeologists of early human presence in Europe, Asia and the Americas, of a site specific population’s diet, subsistence and hunting practices, and of the history of animal domestication, thereby opening a window for us to glimpse at past humans and the animal populations with which they interacted.

Precise identification of osteological specimens, whether human or animal, is critical to archaeological interpretation; archaeologists must be able to identify species, sex, age at death, and whether particular bones show evidence of butchery and/or modification for use as tools.

We have selected human and animal bones that may be instructive in a classroom setting, and useful as identification aids in the field such as bones from animal species that are frequently found in historic and archaeological sites, animal and human pathology and trauma specimens, and a curated selection of human skulls and bones.
