Marsupials

The animals in the Infraclass Metatheria are more commonly known as marsupials. This unique group of mammals is most famously characterized by a front pouch where offspring are contained during lactation (suckling of young). Skeletally, most marsupials have a fenestrated palate (holes in palatine bones in the roof of their mouth) and the mandible has inwardly flared processes. Marsupials appear in the fossil record about 100 million years ago during the Cretaceous period and are theorized to have originated in North America. Today, they can be found in North America, Central and South America, Australia, Tasmania, and New Guinea.
