Turtles and tortoises are members of the order Testudines, a division of the class Reptilia. Some of the earliest fossils were found in sediments to be about 200 million years old. One disincentive skeletal trait of turtles is a primitive skull with no openings on the sides, in the temporal region. A turtle is a water-dwelling animal, while a tortoise is mostly found in terrestrial arid habitats, such as deserts. Testudinologists (scientists who study turtles and tortoises) and wildlife biologists believe there about 320 turtle species currently in existence.
