This skull is from one of the largest American alligators ever found in Florida. The weight of the alligator was an incredible 1043 pounds (the most ever recorded) and its length, according to the official records of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission was 13 feet 10 inches long (putting it in the top five). The skull measures 29 1/2 inches, making it the second longest skull in Florida history. Given that this skull is substantially wider than the longest skull, one could say that this is the largest skull on record.

American alligators are found in freshwater regions of the southeastern United States, primarily in Louisiana and Florida. Its lower teeth fit into sockets in the upper jaw and remain completely hidden when their mouth is closed, while both the upper and lower teeth of a crocodile are visible at all times. The alligator's jaws, which contain 70-80 sharp conical teeth in their rounded snout, are a bit stronger than the crocodile's. In the wild the alligator is thought to live between 35 to 50 years. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
