Articulated Female Pelvis with Pits of Parturition
KO-178-P $205.00
Articulated Pelvis from an Adult African-American Female.
This pelvis has dramatic characteristics diagnostic of female sex including a broad pubic body and subpubic angle, wide and shallow sciatic notches, and flaring ilia. Deep osseous pits (aka 'pits of parturition') are prominent on the posterior aspect of the pubis-a feature which historically was thought to be diagnostic of childbirth or pregnancy. However, the feature may be absent on the pubic bones of women known to have given birth and may be present on the bones of those who have not. An osteological evaluation report (with instructive photographs) detailing the analysis of this specimen is available here: KO-178-P-Report.
Below is an image of the available postcranial parts from KO-178.
