This individual had multiple skeletal malformations. Both humeri show evidence of head degeneration. In addition, there are bilateral supernumerary (extra) cervical ribs, which attached to the seventh cervical vertebra (above the normal first ribs). We have attached one cervical rib, but the other remains unattached. These associated cervical ribs, the C7 vertebra, and both humeri are examples of congenital abnormalities-developmental defects in nerves, muscles, and bone that are typically the result of a problem in embryological development. Many of these defects can be compatible with life and maturity. In other words, they are not lethal, as evidenced here, as this set of pathological specimens is known to be from an older female.
