This incredibly large skull, with its heavy eyebrow ridges, large lower jaw, and thick exaggerated skull bones, comes from a male in his mid-30s who suffered from acromegaly. Acromegaly is an endocrine disorder caused by hypersecretion of growth hormone from the pituitary gland in adulthood, after fusion of the epiphyses of the long bones. This condition usually occurs in adults, between the ages of 20 to 40. The earliest clinical manifestations occur in the face with the overgrowth of the mandible resulting in protrusion of the jaw and lower face (prognathism), in addition to bone enlargement, increased thickness in the skull vault, prominent insertion points for tendons and ligaments, and extreme height. This condition is commonly confused with gigantism. Pituitary giganitism is a rare condition where excessive secretion of growth hormone is secreted by an abnormally functioning pituitary gland in childhood, before the epiphyses on the long bones fuse. This skull would be an excellent addition to any clinical anatomy program focused on endocrine disorders.
