The Bullmastiff is one of the largest dog breeds in terms of mass with a typical weight between 110 to 130lbs. While its size may be intimidating, these gentle giants have an even tempered, affectionate disposition with a propensity for drooling. They are recognized by the American Kennel Club and were bred in England by gamekeepers for protection against poachers. These moderately active dogs are loyal family pets that are protective and need lots of attention. With a lifespan of 9-10 years, these dogs are also prone to certain health conditions, such as hip or elbow dysplasia, dental disease, obesity, and cancer. The skull of the Bullmastiff reflects its canid origins and breed characteristics, being 60% Mastiff and 40% Bulldog; a short muzzle preferably with a level or slight under bite like a Bulldog, and a heavy, square skull with moderately wide set eyes like a Mastiff. This skeleton would be a great addition to any veterinary program or comparative anatomy program focused on canid evolution.
