Spondylolisthesis is a complex injury involving the articular processes of the vertebrae, where fractures occur in the pars interarticularis that allow the vertebral bodies to detach and slide forward. Even though the vertebra has fractured, the ligaments and muscles remain intact and help stabilize the spine. Over time, these ligaments and muscles may lose their ability to resist the anterior displacement of the vertebra and it fully manifests a spondylolisthesis. This model demonstrates spondylolisthesis in 5 grades of anterior sliding of the vertebral body. This injury occurs in young athletes where lumbar extensions are a common exercise, such as gymnastics, wrestling, and martial arts. This model was created in conjunction with Dr. Peter Ward of the West Virginia School of Osteopathic Medicine. A corresponding lesson plan written by Dr. Ward accompanies this model.
