Fetal Human Skull 31 Weeks
BC-180 $94.00
Estimated at 31 weeks, this Bone Clones® cast of a Human Fetal skull exhibits characteristics of prenatal development. The cartilaginous fontanelles are clearly visible in the anterior, mastoid and sphenoid regions of this skull. These fontanelles ossify (turn to bone) over time. Sutures will form along these bony plates to help fuse the skull together as the individual ages. The jaw is detached. Please see our comparative sets: BC-182-SET, BC-194-SET and BC-228-SET.
Our consultant describes his reasoning for determining the age, "I aged the fetal skull by means of the palate which is completely closed at 12 weeks, cranial vault bones (ossified in center portions) base of cranium, presphenoid, postsphenoid, basiocciput. According to these findings, the presphenoid is about 2/3 calcified, the post about 3/4 and the basiocciput is 100% calcified. This puts the fetus at somewhere around 31 weeks, possibly even 28 because of the BPD (Biparietal Diameter). Studies of all ethnic groups ,except people from India, show BPD of 60.5 to 69.2 mm for 24-28 weeks. This skull is 65 mm, the cranial length is 77.5. The cephalic index is 84. This is ok for this age." 1-part skull (jaw glued to cranium).
