Cownose rays can be found in the shallow, brackish waters along the eastern coast of the United States, the Gulf of Mexico, the northern coast of South America and off the coasts of Senegal, Mauritania and Guinea. They have distinct head lobes when viewed from above that resemble a cow’s nose. Like most rays, their tile-like teeth are ideal for crushing crustaceans, mollusks, invertebrates and bony fish. While they do have poisonous stingers, these rays are shy and generally swim at the surface, posing minimal risk to humans stepping on their spines. These rays are Near Threatened according to the IUCN Red List.
