Human Femur Growth Set
COMP-117 $360.00

The human femur is the largest bone in the body and begins to develop early on in fetal development. The shaft of the femur has been developing since the 1st trimester and by birth, the distal epiphysis (growth plate at the end of the femur) is usually present. At 3-5 years of age, the distal epiphysis develops a recognizable shape. Interestingly, while the distal epiphysis is the first epiphysis to develop in the body, it is one of the last to fuse, fusing earlier in females (14-18yrs) and later in males (16-20yrs). The proximal epiphysis (growth plate forming the head of the femur) forms within the 1st year of life and by early childhood, it forms a recognizable shape with distinctive characteristics. By about 12-15 years of age it reaches its distinctive shape. During adolescence, fusion has begun for females at about 14 years old and for males at about 16 years old.

Includes femora from the following skeletons:
Human Fetal Skeleton, Full Term
Human 14-16-month-old Child Skeleton
Human 6-year-old Child Skeleton
Human Adolescent Skeleton
Human Adult Male Asian Skeleton
