Red Panda Skull

The Red Panda is more closely related to mustelids (raccoons and weasels) than to the Giant Panda. Its Latin name is inspired by its fiery red fur. Like the Giant Panda, it has a modified wrist bone, a radial sesamoid that functions like a pseudo-thumb for grasping bamboo stalks. While the much larger Giant Panda (200-250 pounds) eats the stalk, the Red Panda (10-20 pounds) prefers the tender leaves, eating up to 200,000 leaves each day. 2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
