The mastodon's limb bones were massive and heavy. Extrapolating from the 43-inch femur, it is estimated that this example of Mammut americanum stood over nine feet at its shoulder. It is also thought to have been 35 to 40 years old upon its demise more than 12,000 years ago. We are grateful to the Babiarz Institute of Paleontological Studies for the opportunity to cast this specimen.
