Whooping Crane Skull
BC-361 $185.00
One of the tallest birds in North America, the awe-inspiring whooping crane is characterized by snowy white plumage and a red cap and is testament to the conservation efforts of biologists to bring this bird from the brink of extinction. This impressive bird can be as tall as 5ft, with a wingspan of more than 7ft and weighing about 15lbs.
During the 1940’s there were only about 21 whooping cranes in North America, with about 15 individuals that regularly migrated from Canada to Texas. Most of this population decline is due to habitat destruction and hunting. However, with the help of the International Crane Foundation and international cooperation between Canada and the United States, there are about 600 individuals (about 440 in the wild and 160 in captivity) that are descendants of a small flock from Texas. The wild self-sustaining flock breeds in Canada and winters in Texas. As of now, there are 3 reintroduced populations of birds with the help of extensive breeding programs. Researchers are teaching one migratory flock of young cranes to migrate from Wisconsin breeding grounds and to winter in Florida.
2-part skull (separate cranium & jaw).
