American Kestrel Skull
BC-242 $150.00

The American kestrel is the smallest and most common of the North American falcons. The more colorful male is rusty with blue-gray wings, a pale underside, two black stripes on its face, and a series of pale spots on the edge of its flight wings. Fond of perching on conveniently-situated telephone wires or fence posts, it feeds on insects and small rodents. They often hover directly over their prey before dropping on top of it. The kestrel is sometimes called the sparrow hawk because it will eat small birds in the wintertime. It nests in natural tree cavities, holes made by woodpeckers, eaves of buildings, and manmade boxes. It is considered a noisy little bird. 1-part skull (jaw glued to cranium).
