Near term fetal chimpanzee skull shows the beginning eruption of incisors and early molars. The gestation period for chimpanzees is about 8 months. Their weight at birth is about four pounds; they grow to an adult weight of up to 120 pounds if male and up to 100 pounds if female. Their faces are pale at birth, gradually darkening as they age. The infant is dependent on its mother for several years. Adult females give birth to a single offspring every three to five years. Compare with human fetal skull.
