Our completely disarticulated large dog front leg is from an older bullmastiff (click to view the full skeleton), and includes bones of the canine forelimb: the scapula, humerus, ulna, radius, carpals, metacarpals and phalanges. Virtually indistinguishable from real™ continues to be our motto. Our casting, molding, and production processes retain important osteological detail, and our resins are durable and resist breakage, making this canine model limb an excellent and academically sound alternative to the use of real animal bone in veterinary education. This skeleton would be a great addition to any veterinary program or comparative anatomy program focused on canid evolution.

Dogs use digitigrade locomotion, meaning that they bear weight on their phalanges, while ankles/wrists are elevated. Digitigrade locomotion offers an optimal combination of endurance, speed, and stealth for a terrestrial mammalian carnivore. Analysis of the size and form of a predator’s forelimb can indicate a predator’s hunting style. Flexibility in dog forelimbs (for grappling with pounced-upon prey) was sacrificed for stability, which provides support for sustained running. Domestic dogs exhibit a high degree of morphological variability; different breeds and individuals are best suited to different activities such as protection, retrieving, herding, hunting, and companionship.
