Paranthropus boisei Mandible "Peninj"

The Peninj mandible is assigned to the species Paranthropus boisei. This almost perfectly preserved mandible with a complete set of teeth was discovered in 1964 near Lake Naron, a site close to Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. Using radiometric dating, it is estimated to be 1.7 – 1.3 million years old. The mandible is from an adult male and exhibits a robust, thick mandibular body with small incisors and very large post-canine teeth. Due to its remarkable preservation, detailed examination of the morphology of the mandible confirms the robust nature of this East African species when compared to other Paranthropus specimens found in South Africa.
