Set of 7 Primate Skulls
BH-KRO-3 $2,090.00

The full-size companion set to the KAM-SET-7 set of half scale primate skulls consists of gorilla, human, and chimp Bone Clones® replica skulls cast from original bone, as well as Australopithecus afarensis, Australopithecus boisei, Homo erectus, and Homo neanderthalensis Bone Clones® skulls from the Fossil Hominid collection of carefully sculpted recreations. Useful for comparative study, these 7 skulls represent significant species in primate evolution.

See our Hominid Evolution Lesson Plan for a student lab activity, designed to introduce students to hominid evolution and the scientific method using research, data collection and analysis. Includes: teacher guide, student instructions, and 4 spreading calipers.

Representing extant primates: the largest of the primates (Gorilla), a modern human of Asian ancestry, and the genetically closest relative (Chimpanzee) to modern humans.

Representing Fossil Hominids: A. afarensis ( 2.9 to 3.6 MYA): An early hominid found only in Africa; A. boisei (1.8 MYA): A unique species in hominid evolution with a massive skull, enormous molars and cranial adaptations for powerful chewing, hence its nickname Nutcracker Man; Homo erectus (300,000 to 600,000 YA): A remarkable recreation by Tattersall and Sawyer of Peking Man, found near Beijing, China, at the Zhoukoudian Cave in the late 1920s; H. neanderthalensis (50,000 YA): A "classic" Neanderthal, found in France, with features best representing the species.

All items are available individually but have been discounted for a significant savings when purchased as a set. The Bone Clones® Fossil Hominid line is composed of discoveries from anatomically modern humans, archaic humans, early Homo, early hominins, and other hominids. The majority of the casts in this line have been recreated by our team of anatomical sculptors. Some are reconstructions made by anthropology professionals using fragmentary elements from original discoveries and extrapolating the missing parts from those (i.e. Neanderthal skeleton).

Display stands are available below, and are listed on each individual skull's webpage.

This is the same lesson plan and calipers that are included in BH-KRO-7 Set of 7 Primate Skulls. This lesson plan can also be used in conjunction with set BH-KRO-3 (the same skulls as BH-KRO-7, but the fossil hominids are painted).

Materials Included:

• Teacher Guide

• Mystery Skull Lab Activity Student Instructions
◦ Human, Non-human Primate, and Hominid Information Sheets
◦ Hypothesis and Skull Measurement Definition Sheets
◦ Skull Data Collection Sheet
◦ Graph and Questions Sheets
• 4 Spreading Calipers

This lab activity is designed to introduce students to hominid evolution and the scientific method using research, data collection and analysis using Bone Clones Set of 7 Primate Skulls. By comparing hominids to modern humans and non-human primates, students will gain an understanding of some of the skull modifications that took place during human evolution.

Students are divided in groups and given a "mystery skull", where their objective is to study the skull, read the provided literature, and state a hypothesis about which skull they may have based on their reading. Students will collect data through measurements, record, analyze and revisit their hypothesis on accompanying work sheets.

This engaging lesson will expose students to the scientific method and highlight the importance for fact-based conclusions.
