An excellent example of an adult female Weddell seal. Weddell seals are large, bulky pinnipeds that live around Antarctica in the Southern Ocean, with some sightings in South America, New Zealand and Southern Australia. These seals live the furthest south of any mammal on the planet, living on fast ice and move in response to changing ice conditions. Underwater swimming occurs under thin ice so that breathing holes can be created using their canine teeth. These excellent swimmers can stay submerged for up to 80 mins, feeding on various fish including Antarctic cod. Adults are dark gray to brown with light patches on their belly and can weight up to 900lbs, with females sometimes tipping the scale at over 1000lbs. Weddell seal pups are born with light gray or occasionally with golden fur. This pinniped is a member of the "earless" seal family (Phocidae), which differs from sea lions (Otariidae) who have external ear flaps. Seals are generally smaller, have quieter vocalizations, rear flippers that point away from the body, and get around on land on their belly. Listed as "Least Concern" on the IUCN Red List, these seals are protected by international agreements - the Antarctic Treaty and the Convention for the Conservation of Antarctic Seals.
