Human Female Cranium, Meningioma
BCH-809 $357.00
This bone pathology cast of a cranium from the Hrdlicka Paleopathology Collection, San Diego Museum of Man holds interest for educators in the areas of physical anthopology, paleopathology and human anatomy. Cranial meningiomas are not malignant tumors but commonly result in new bone production. The earliest paleopathological evidence of a meningioma is from an archaeological skull estimated to be about 365,000 years old. BCH-809 is part of the collection assembled by Dr. Ales Hrdlicka of the Smithsonian Institute for the Panama-California exhibition held in San Diego in 1915. It elicits a massive development of spongy bone involving nearly all of the frontal squama and extending onto parietals, especially the left, with some internal involvement. There is also extensive posterior tooth loss, resorption, and alveolar abscessing with a large abscess at the right first molar and a small abscess at the left second molar perforating the maxillary sinus. Additionally, this skull displays artificial deformation (lambdoidal flattening). With gratitude to the San Diego Museum of Man. A portion of the sales goes to further their work.
